Cancelling before the posted deadline refunds your registration fee in full, but College Board charges a separate cancellation fee, so you still get back less than you paid. Changing your test center carries its own fee, and changing your test date is generally handled as a cancellation plus a new registration rather than a swap. The three things people confuse: cancelling a registration, changing a test center, and changing a test date are three different transactions with three different costs. A center change moves where you sit and nothing else. A date change effectively means giving up the current registration and taking a new one. Cancelling ends the registration and refunds the fee, less the cancellation charge. Deadlines govern all of it, and the charge goes up as you get closer to test day. The practical rule: if a family already knows the student will not sit on a given date, act immediately rather than waiting to be sure — waiting costs money and never saves any. Fee-waiver students are in a different position. Because the base registration fee was waived rather than paid, cancelling does not involve a refund, and there is no cancellation penalty to absorb. A student on a waiver who is not ready should cancel without agonizing about it. Two things cancelling does not do. It does not remove a registration you already sat — that is score cancellation, an entirely separate and much more consequential decision.
