How do the SAT's adaptive modules work?

Each section (Reading & Writing, then Math) has two modules. Everyone gets the same first module at a mixed difficulty level; how a student performs on it determines whether their second module skews harder or easier — and the scoring model accounts for that difficulty when calculating the final score.

This design is called multistage adaptive testing. It's different from question-by-question adaptive tests (where difficulty shifts after every answer) — instead, the digital SAT adapts once per section, at the module boundary.

Module 1 in each section is fixed and identical in structure for every test-taker, spanning a range of difficulty. Based on overall performance on that module, the system routes each student to one of two versions of Module 2: a harder set or an easier set.

This matters for scoring, not just experience. Because the system knows exactly which Module 2 a student received, it can correctly credit someone who works through a harder module even if they miss a few more questions than someone acing an easier one. Two students with the same raw number of correct answers, but different Module 2 difficulty, will not necessarily get the same score — the math accounts for it.

Practically, this means there's no benefit to intentionally answering Module 1 questions wrong to try to "unlock" an easier Module 2 — the scoring model is designed so that performing your best on every question, every time, is always the right strategy.
