How does the digital SAT work?
The digital SAT has 2 sections — Reading & Writing, then Math — each split into 2 modules, for 98 questions total in 2 hours and 14 minutes. It's adaptive: how you do on each section's first module determines whether the second module is easier or harder, and scores (400–1600) account for that difficulty.
Every digital SAT has the same shape: Section 1 is Reading & Writing (2 modules, 27 questions each, 32 minutes per module), and Section 2 is Math (2 modules, 22 questions each, 35 minutes per module). That's 98 scored questions across roughly 2 hours 14 minutes, with a short break between sections.
The test is administered through Bluebook, the College Board's official testing app, either on a school- or student-owned laptop/tablet or a school-provided device. A graphing calculator (Desmos, built into the app) is available for the entire math section, and students can also bring an approved physical calculator.
The adaptive part is a technique called multistage testing. Everyone gets the same first module in each section, built at a mix of difficulty levels. Based on how a student performs on that first module, the app serves either a harder or an easier second module. Because the scoring model knows which second module a student received, someone who nails a harder module and someone who nails an easier one aren't scored identically — the difficulty is baked into the math behind the final score.
One practical effect: once you submit a module, you can't go back to it — but you can move freely between questions within the module you're currently on, flag questions to revisit, and use the built-in tools (calculator, reference sheet, annotation, highlighting) throughout.
