How do I get an SAT fee waiver?
SAT fee waivers are available to eligible low-income students in 11th and 12th grade in the U.S., and you get one through your school counselor — not by applying online yourself. A waiver covers two SAT registrations, score sends to colleges, and college application fee waivers at participating schools for seniors.
Eligibility is generally based on federal income eligibility guidelines or on an existing indicator the school already has on file — enrollment in the free or reduced-price lunch program, participation in a federal or state assistance program, being in foster care or a ward of the state, experiencing homelessness, or taking part in a qualifying college-access program. Because the school usually already has that information, the conversation is often shorter than families expect.
The step families skip is simply asking. Counselors don't always volunteer waivers, and many eligible students pay full price for years without knowing they qualified. Ask directly — the counselor's office is where waivers are issued.
Ninth and tenth graders are not eligible for SAT registration fee waivers even if the family meets every income criterion. That doesn't mean nothing is available earlier: the PSAT and school-day testing are often free or reduced through the school, so it's worth asking what your school covers.
Two things to know about timing: waivers work best when applied at registration rather than after paying, and the associated college application fee waivers for seniors are a separate benefit that has to be requested when applying to colleges — they don't apply automatically.
