Does the digital SAT have an essay?

No. The digital SAT has no essay and no writing prompt. It is two sections — Reading and Writing, and Math — made up entirely of multiple-choice questions and student-produced math answers, with nothing to write by hand or type as an essay.

If an older cousin, a family friend or an old prep book mentions an SAT essay, they are describing a past version of the test. The optional essay was discontinued before the digital format arrived, and the digital SAT does not bring it back in any form.

That does not mean writing skills stop mattering. The Reading and Writing section tests how well you can revise sentences for clarity, choose the right word or transition, and follow the conventions of standard English — all through short questions rather than extended writing. A student who writes carefully tends to find that section more natural.

A few colleges in the past asked for the essay, which is why some older advice still says it matters. Colleges set their own requirements, so the dependable move is to check each school's current admissions page rather than assume. The digital SAT itself has nothing to submit on that front.

The practical effect for study time: no essay practice is needed for this test. The time that older plans spent on essay outlines can go to the two things that are actually scored — Reading and Writing questions and Math.
