How do I register for the SAT?

The steps, in order: create (or sign in to) a College Board account; open the SAT registration section; choose your test date; choose a test center from the ones with open seats near you; upload a clear, recent photo of the student's face; then pay or apply a fee waiver. You get an admission ticket to print or save — that plus a photo ID is what gets the student into the room.

Seats are not unlimited. Test centers are individual schools with individual capacities, and popular ones in a metro area fill early — sometimes weeks before the deadline. Families who wait until the last week routinely end up driving forty minutes to a center they did not choose. Registering the day the date opens is the cheapest thing you can do to avoid that.

Two timing details worth putting on the calendar. First, the regular deadline is roughly two weeks before test day, and everything after that is late registration with an added fee. Second, students who need a borrowed device should sort that out early: ask the school or family first, and if a College Board loaner is the answer, the request goes in through My SAT after you register, at least 30 days before test day — 30 days is the deadline for the request, not for registering.
